National Seafood Month: What It Means

National Seafood Month aims to educate consumers about the benefits of seafood consumption and sustainability. Seafood industry professionals gather throughout the month to share information about seafood with consumers. Consumers can learn more about the health benefits of seafood consumption, the environmental impact of the fishing industry, and how to prepare their favorite seafood dishes at home throughout October.

Who Is the Marine Stewardship Council?

The MSC is an independent non-profit that runs the world’s leading certification and ecolabeling program for sustainable fisheries. By implementing transparent supply chains, they reverse overfishing, combat illegal fishing, and prevent seafood fraud around the world. Seafood buyers, which includes both companies and consumers, can choose certified sustainable options with the blue MSC ecolabel.

The Statistics

In a study completed by Global Scan, MSC found out that 85% of people are concerned about the state of the ocean. 68% believe that the choices they make with regard to buying seafood could make a difference to the overall health of the oceans. 67% want to know that their fish can be traced back to a trusted source.

The goal of the MSC campaign is to create a general awareness of the MSC label; this label is only placed on products that are certified as being sustainably sourced.

The Benefits of Eating Seafood

Do you mean, besides being super tasty? Yes, fish and seafood have tons of benefits for your body, including the following:

  • Fish provide essential nutrients. It does depend on which kind of fish you’re eating, but fish is a great source of vitamins A, B, and D!
  • Heart health. Seafood is low in saturated fat and high in protein. Plus, fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that can aid in the reduction of heart attacks or strokes.
  • Flex those joints: the omega-3 fatty acid found in fish also helps with reducing stiffness in joints.
